THE SPIRITUALITY OF BETRAYAL

Detectives know about betrayal, and Parker knew about detectives.

Robert B Parker was an American author and professor of literature who wrote detective novels featuring the characters Spencer ('spelled with a c' he would always say,) and Jesse Stone, who is showcased on Netflix right now. He earned a PhD in English literature from Boston University, but his interest in crime fiction led him to write his first novel, "The Godwulf Manuscript" in 1973. He went on to write over 70 books, including the Spencer and Jesse Stone series, which became popular TV shows and movies.

Parker's works explore the themes of crime, justice, and morality, often with a focus on the role of law enforcement in society. While it is unlikely that Parker directly addressed the betrayal of Judas in his works, his novels often deal with the same themes of loyalty, trust, and betrayal.

As we heard on Pray-As-You-Go.org in today's gospel reading, the story of the betrayal of Judas is one of the most famous betrayals in history. But betrayal is not limited to biblical stories or detective novels. It happens in everyday life too. People betray each other in small and big ways all the time. Betrayal can be devastating and can cause long-lasting damage to relationships.

But betrayal can also be a spiritual opportunity. The 12-steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, developed by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, provide a framework for recovering from alcoholism and addictions. "We" is the first word in the 12-steps for all 12-step programs (for a current list see Wikipedia,) to emphasize the importance of a support network. The 12-steps involve admitting powerlessness over alcohol or other substances, seeking help from a higher power or support group, making amends for past wrongs, and practicing spiritual principles in daily life.

Time Magazine recognized Bill Wilson as one of the most important people of the 20th century because he had found a way for people to come together and share about their spiritual practices and what they all have in common rather than fighting over the differences. Some people have applied the principles of the 12-steps more broadly to personal growth and spiritual development. Some have even suggested that the principles of the 12-steps could be applied to societal issues, such as conflict resolution and world peace.

Overall, betrayal is a part of life, and we can use it as an opportunity to grow spiritually and connect with others. The 12-steps provide a framework for recovery and personal growth, emphasizing the importance of our support network and the power of spirituality.
