Be who? Do what next? How may I help?

Feast Day of St. Ignatius of Loyola
July 31, 2020

Dear Friends,

Let's all take a few minutes today to reflect on where we are now, where we have been, where are we going, and what are the next few steps, as far as we can see through the fog.

For me, what I see 5 years or so out is to Recover America with a healthy small group in every neighborhood, every neighborhood where we work, and every neighborhood where we live.

Right now I'm recruiting students for the Franklin Circle Online that is forming right now, and I'm recruiting faculty who want to form a new Franklin Circle in their neighborhood.

Next step: IDEA Cafe this afternoon and Socrates Cafe at University of Denver, both online for right now (see post below.)

Why? My hope is to play a small part in restoring the vitalism and dynamism to the economy, to Recover America by strengthening grassroots, the voices of the informed and involved common person.

How may I help you? Right now, while it's on your mind, call me. I'd hate for us to miss this chance to work together.

Zoom. Help!

Friday, July 24, 2020

Dear friend,

We had trouble with Zoom again tonight. I'm very sorry for anyone who tried to get into our LoDo Socrates Cafe and wasn't able to join us.

I'm going to continue trying to learn Zoom, maybe it was me, I suppose that is possible. But whether tonight was me or not it's clear to me that I must have help.

I'm going to find 1) an expert, probably paid, who I can rely on for computer advice for myself, the Small Business Chamber of Commerce, Inc (if you haven't joined yet, do so while it's still free, just "Visit Group" on our Facebook Page www.SmallBizChamber.org) and 2) I'm going to form a data committee for the SBCC.

The US Marine Corps has changed the basic structure of Marine Platoon, it now includes computer/telecommunications expertise, and it seems that's our big lack here with what I've been trying to do here in Denver for the past few years.

Also, I need to find a mortgage broker who can help me finance a single family home, please call me with the name and cell phone number of anyone you know who you'd recommend. Again, sorry for the trouble again tonight with Zoom.

Socrates Cafe, a fun way for all ages to learn. Come think with us.

Each week I facilitate 3 meetings of Socrates Cafe. For now, we are meeting online. They are free and open to everyone.

I organized and facilitated the first Socrates Cafe here in Denver over 20 years ago and I've been helping start new meetings ever since.

There are 3 Socrates Cafes I go to for my own benefit each week. I'm interested in them because 1) they are fun, and 2) they give me a chance to practice my critical thinking, my listening skills, and my ability to express myself.

Recent research shows Socrates Cafes are a good way for the generations to spend an hour together in a way that includes everyone, more and more nursing homes and rehab facilities are scheduling meetings for clients and encouraging clients to organize a session with family and friends.

If you'd like to know more about Socrates Cafes I suggest you attend one now while they are online. You might also find it helpful to read Chris Phillip's book "Socrates Cafe."

Here are the 3 meetings I'm usually leading right now each week here in Denver that are for now meeting online, click for more information and to rsvp:

Tuesdays, Denver Trinity Church
Fridays, LoDo Denver
Saturdays, University of Denver
