Free Online Socrates Cafe Society Open Dialogue Friday, Saturday, 1st Sunday or Tuesday.

Socrates Cafe Society has moved to Google Meet for our free 90 minute online dialogues. We meet each Friday, Saturday, 1st Sunday, and each Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Denver time.

The Meeting ID is posted at 6 p.m. here on www.JohnWren.com the day of each meeting.

At 6:30 p.m. those present at our opening are eligible to suggest a topic and to vote. The person who suggested the top vote-getting topic is asked to give a short talk on the topic, define terms, and to answer questions about the opening share and to share again just before we adjourn.

We've been meeting here in Denver since the Friday after 9/11. We are about to launch a campaign to encourage the formation of a face-to-face Socrates Cafe in public libraries, as we do now on Saturday evenings at the University of Denver.

If you'd like to see a face-to-face group form at your favorite library, you are invited to participate with us for now and to ask for whatever help you need to get the new group started.

When we post here next Tuesday we post a notice on Twitter, follow us at @SocratesCafes. If you have any questions or suggestions call me (303)861-1447 and leave a detailed message.

10 Good Topics for Philosophical Dialogue. Thanks Chat GPT.

Online with John Wren. www.JohnWren.com for Link to Socrates Cafe Online Call (303)861-1447

JSW Asks: What are the top ten topic for a good philosophical dialogue?
ChatGPT says: Creating a list of the top ten topics for philosophical dialogue can be somewhat subjective, as different people may have varying interests and perspectives. However, I'll provide a selection of diverse and thought-provoking philosophical topics that are commonly explored and discussed:

Ethics and Morality: Delve into questions about the nature of right and wrong, ethical dilemmas, and the foundation of moral principles.

Existentialism: Discuss the meaning of life, individuality, freedom, and the search for purpose in an apparently indifferent universe.

Epistemology: Explore the nature of knowledge, truth, belief, and how we can be certain of what we claim to know.

Metaphysics: Engage in discussions about reality, existence, the nature of being, and the relationship between mind and matter.

Philosophy of Mind: Examine the mind-body problem, consciousness, and the relationship between mental states and the physical brain.

Political Philosophy: Analyze different political systems, the legitimacy of authority, social justice, and the rights and responsibilities of individuals and governments.

Aesthetics: Discuss the nature of beauty, art, and the role of aesthetics in shaping our experiences and understanding of the world.

Free Will vs. Determinism: Debate the extent to which human actions are determined by external factors or if we have genuine freedom of choice.

Philosophy of Science: Examine the nature of scientific inquiry, the scientific method, and the relationship between science and other forms of knowledge.

Mindfulness and Consciousness: Explore practices of mindfulness, meditation, and how conscious awareness can influence our understanding of the self and reality.

These topics should serve as a good starting point for engaging philosophical dialogues. Remember, the essence of a fruitful philosophical conversation lies in open-mindedness, critical thinking, and respectful exchange of ideas.

Socrates Cafe, a fun way for all ages to learn. Come think with us.

Each week I facilitate 3 meetings of Socrates Cafe. For now, we are meeting online. They are free and open to everyone.

I organized and facilitated the first Socrates Cafe here in Denver over 20 years ago and I've been helping start new meetings ever since.

There are 3 Socrates Cafes I go to for my own benefit each week. I'm interested in them because 1) they are fun, and 2) they give me a chance to practice my critical thinking, my listening skills, and my ability to express myself.

Recent research shows Socrates Cafes are a good way for the generations to spend an hour together in a way that includes everyone, more and more nursing homes and rehab facilities are scheduling meetings for clients and encouraging clients to organize a session with family and friends.

If you'd like to know more about Socrates Cafes I suggest you attend one now while they are online. You might also find it helpful to read Chris Phillip's book "Socrates Cafe."

Here are the 3 meetings I'm usually leading right now each week here in Denver that are for now meeting online, click for more information and to rsvp:

Tuesdays, Denver Trinity Church
Fridays, LoDo Denver
Saturdays, University of Denver

Topic for Socrates Cafe?

I'm going to suggest this as a topic for Socrates Cafe at DU this evening, Saturday, June 23. Free and open to everyone, join us! For more info and optional rsvp see www.Meetup.com/Socrates-Cafe-Society

Pot and politics.

What do you think? Is pot ok? My views here later.

I'll be suggesting a related topic at Socrates Cafe in LoDo this evening: how do we individually and as a society make decisions regarding what's healthy and what is not healthy. Have health concerns and fitness centers become our religion? If so, what is the accepted dogma?

Usually a good discussion, 6 p.m. at Panera Bread LoDo, more at www.Meetup.com/Socrates-Cafe-Society about this evening (Fri, 1-5) and our other metro-Denver Socrates Cafes. Join us!

Start a Socrates Cafe in Your Neighborhood.

"Lilly" Allie Wren 2017
Starting a new group is like learning a new medical procedure, just more fun.

A nurse attended an IDEA Cafe Startup Workshop. We usually talk about the value of getting a job in the direction of your dream, to learn from people who are already doing something similar to what you want to do.

"That reminds me of what they taught us in nursing school," she said. "When a new procedure came out we were told to watch one, do one, and then teach one."

To start a new Socrates Cafe, I suggest you attend one, lead one, start one. Or just read Chris Phillips book "Socrates Cafe." That's what I did.

There is a great need here in Denver and across Colorado for new Socrates Cafes. Right now there is one on Friday evening, Saturday evening, and Tuesday evening. Attend one soon, you are very welcome to lead one whenever you want, then start one at a time and place that will word for you. See www.Meetup.com/Socrates-Cafe-Society.

Call me if you have any questions, or post your question here as a comment. If you post, please call to let me know to look for it if I don't answer by the end of the day.

What is your foundation? Rock or sand?

I try to end and start the day listening to Pray as You Go (click here to hear it.)

This morning's meditation particularly powerful: "Can you share your deepest desire with God?"

I'm going to suggest the topic of "Foundations" at Socrates Cafe tonight at DU, next Tuesday at Trinity Church, and Friday at LoDo Panera. Join us? More info on our meetup site about all 3, or let us help you start a new one at a time and place that would work better for you. More info and optional rsvp on our Meetup site, check it out: www.Meetup.com/Socrates-Cafe-Society

For more about the Small Business Chamber and the Startup Show click here.

PLEASE RE-TWEET AND SHARE you never know who wants to start in a new direction with their work and would really appreciate knowing about the free help we offer.

Also, please share it in a personal email to the board members of your local chamber of commerce and the publisher of your local community newspaper, we would be delighted to talk with you or them about how the Small Business Chamber of Commerce can help them start a new Socrates Cafe.

Call first for an appointment. A volunteer will return you call asap, usually by the start of the next business day, Monday- Friday except holidays. FOR MORE NOW SEE "Daring Might Things-- The Simplest Way to Start Your First (or Next) New Business." click here
