Peanuts cartoon: Lucy at table with sign "Advice 5-cents."

BLAST FROM THE PAST.
Blog post here from 2004:

I've stopped daily 5-minute broadcasts, have had no complaints. No complaints = it was a waste of everyone's time. If you want to know what I think about something, pick up the phone and call. :-)

Now my plan for my YouTube channel is to do only SPECIAL EDITION The Startup Show, post right here on JohnWren.com. I'm going to view what I'm doing with the videos, Internet, consulting help to find clients more good customers as more like selling cut flowers or fresh fruit, something viewers can watch, enjoy, benefit from, and then move on, calling me if they want to talk more now.

I need to get over the crazy thought I'm creating this valuable stockpile of wisdom. If I really want to do that I need to write for a newspaper or magazine that has great editors or teach at a great college. Maybe someday...

I'm standing by my cart offering a flower or an apple, not the old German history teacher I had at Cornell College giving all of us in the large auditorium facts and his understanding of 400BC in Ancient Greece.

If you want my thoughts or if you want me to listen as you clarify you own thoughts, which is usually much more helpful to you, give me a call. You'll usually catch me from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday to Friday on my cell (720)495-4949.

I'm still experimenting.
Now Startup Show on Facebook.
Live each Friday, noon MST.

Business births and deaths

Since the recession began in December 2007, business births have experienced the steepest decline in the history of the series. New establishments are not being formed at the same levels seen before the economic downturn began, and the number is much lower than it was during the 2001 recession.  From Bureau Labor Statistics, more at http://www.bls.gov/bdm/entrepreneurship/entrepreneurship.htm

Is small the new big thing?

John McLaughlin on his McLaughlin Report last Friday made his New Year's prediction for the year ahead, as he always does.

The prediction this year: Small is the new big thing. Countries are breaking up, USSR is now 15 countries, etc. etc. And within countries tribes are forming.

Tradition does not accommodate this, as Nobel economist Edmund Phelps discusses in his new book Mass Flourishing. Did you get a chance to watch the SPECIAL REPORT The Startup Show with him I posted here yesterday?

Here's a graphic illustration, using Google's very interesting new tool nGram:

Tradition, the way things have always been done is hard to overcome. To me it seems that was one of the primary messages of the carpenter 2000 years ago. He planted seeds that have resulted in this, socialism, a move beyond the tribal way of living that had evolved to the feudal system, even more oppressive, then the merchentile form of socialism, and now the sudden surge in the grassroots,it seems to me, what do you think?:

Pope Francis as Economist.

I love Pope Francis, he is my spiritual leader.

But he needs to catch up on economics. I've suggested that he read Edmund Phelps, Nobel economist, especially his new book Mass Flourishing. Who would be interested in a study group using it? Take a look at the book, then call me. We could do face to face or as a Google+ Hangout. Maybe Pope Francis would join us.  Here's the book: http://press.princeton.edu/titles/10058.html
