Socrates Cafes for YOU?
Socrates Café for Older Adults: Intergenerational Connectedness Through Facilitated Conversation

Abstract
Opportunities for social connectedness are important for older adults' psychosocial well-being. Social connections through intergenerational engagement provide older adults benefits such as increased generativity, improved cognitive functioning, and a greater sense of self-worth. The facilitated discussion known as Socrates Café is ideally suited for bridging generation gaps and inviting self-expression. Socrates Cafés provide an alternative to more traditional social programming by promoting communal inquiry and substantive reflection on questions of value and meaning. In a study of an intergenerational Socrates Café with college students and low-income older adults, findings indicated reduced ageism and stereotyping from students, the formation of relationships between students and older adults, and a recognition from older adults that they had valuable insights to share with younger generations. Health professionals wishing to improve psychosocial health for older adults may consider setting up an intergenerational Socrates Café. Five years out, one day at a time.
Add caption |
After we sold Western Merchants to NMS Industries Pop went to a meeting of all the owner CEOs that NMS had bought to learn about the 5 year plans NMS was requiring them all to write.
As they walked out for lunch the owner CEO who had sat next to dad whispered to him, "they want me to tell them what's going to happen in 5 years? I hate to tell them this, but I have no idea what is going to happen next week!"
My dream for 5 years out? A healthy small group in every neighborhood, doing a plan for the day each morning.
Happy Father's Day Pop.

Startups Try Harder.
I wrote this as a staff member of the' 65 Denver Thomas Jefferson High School yearbook, 5 years before Robert Townsend wrote the best selling "Up the Organization" about learning in 2nd place. "We try harder" is how CEO Townsend put it in the headlines of the ads for his #2 Avis (Hertz was #1 in market share.)
But throws fall short,
And scores come too late,
All teams can't finish first.
Learning is second place.
From TJ Yearbook, thanks Classmates.com For more about my thinking about startup see my "Daring Mighty Things." |

Wikipedia Article: "Entrepreneurship."
Have you read the Wikipedia article "Entrepreneurship"?
It's a real mess. If there are now 6,000 professors of entrepreneurship across the US now, as Carl Schramm claims in his book "Burn the Business Plan," why hasn't something been done about this? What other industry is so poorly described on Wikipedia?
Here are the references for the statements, most statements, on the Wikipedia article. Which should be purged for one reason or another? What's missing? I'd be very, very interested in your thoughts on this. Thanks!
