St. Stephen a Success?
Perfect icon for me today, St. Stephen who was stoned to death as St. Paul watched.
Somewhere Shakespeare tells us in one of his plays (Hamlet?) to "count no man happy until he is dead." I've had times where things were going well, everyone seemed to be for whatever it was I was doing. Not like that right now.
More on Startup Show in just a few minutes, on each day Monday thru Saturday if you "Visit Group" on www.Facebook.com/Small.Business.Chamber and join us now while it's still free.

Why speak out?
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

On this day, 1953
This is University Park Elementary School, I went to the 3rd grade on the 2nd floor. Not shown is the addition that had been built on and that survives today, this building is gone. Wooden floors, real black boards, a regulator clock. My first day was October 31, 1953, 65 years ago today.
This is the house mom and dad built, my bedroom was the dorm window in the middle of the house. 2305 S. Jackson St.
When we moved to Loveland Colorado in 1949 this was a house we rented. Some of my earliest memories.

Jordan Peterson is wrong about goal setting.
Peterson prescribes goal setting as a key ingredient in a happy, successful life. He is wrong.
Repeated studies show there is just no correlation between having written goals and success in any way you want to measure it.
Check out this foudational Harvard study of the question: https://www.hbs.edu/faculty/Publication%20Files/09-083.pdf
Why do we hear so much about goal setting? Because it's a good seller in book stores, talks on the lecture circuit, and in consulting.
What do successful people do instead? My experience and education has taught me they practice the same recover, imagine, think, learn skills of the successful startup.

On the Startup Show today: Is Jordan Peterson our new Mr. Rogers?
New book is out about Fred Rogers and there was a recent documentary. Tom Hanks is playing Mr. Rogers in a new docu-drama about the very popular public TV show of his.
What I've suddenly realized is the young men who are so attracted to Jordan Peterson are the ones who grewup with Mr. Rogers instead of a father.

Philosophy for CEOs, Startups and Serial Killers.
Socrates Cafe this evening at the University of Denver was excellent. Topic was Jung's idea that if we don't deal with the unconcious mind, we will never escape the shadow side of life.
Serial Killers? We may start including that in the title of the group, which is now "Socrates Cafe: Philosophy for CEOs, Startups, and Other Pioneers." Why the change?
Check out Netflix "MindHunters" if you haven't seen it already and you will understand. True story of FBI agents profiling serial killers who are joined by a psychologist who reads some of their interviews and realizes they fit the profile of the group she studies, CEOs. Really.
Join Julie Monday evening for the new Socrates Cafe near the Tech Center in the Castlewood Library, I'll be at the Englewood Library Tuesday evening, check them and others out at www.Meetup.com/Socrates-Cafe-Society
Jordan Peterson is here in Denver tomorrow. Amazingly it is not sold out as is the usual case at all his talks, and I've not seen any advertising. I just Tweeted President Trump, suggested he join Peterson on the stage tomorrow. We'll see.
I'll post my reaction to what Peterson shares tomorrow right here and on the Startup Show. Have a blessed Sunday. +++

Confronting Evil
Dr. Bud Harris: "Evil is a call, perhaps a demand from life, for us to develop a more profound sense of self-knowledge and consciousness. It may help us to recall Jung in an interview when he passionately says,
...Each time we integrate part of our shadow we reduce the evil in the world but when we fail to do this, to
"The world hangs by a slender thread and
that thread is the consciousness of man.
WE are the great danger.
What if something goes wrong with the psyche?
But we know nothing about it and it seems
that if we are well fed and clothed we have
little urge to learn about ourselves and that
is our greatest mistake of all."

Climate Change Controversy on Colorado Board of Education.
6/14/2018 Oakland, Ca.--The Colorado state board of education voted to adopt a new set of state science standards on June 13, 2018, despite opposition from members of the board who "disliked the way the standards treated climate change as a real phenomenon," according to Chalkbeat (June 14, 2018).
Based in part on the National Research Council's A Framework for K-12 Science Education, on which the Next Generation Science Standards are also based, the new standards (PDF) recognize, at both the middle school and the high school level, the impact of human activities on the global climate system.
In contrast, the previous standards were "pretty wishy-washy" on climate change, as NCSE's Glenn Branch told the Aurora Sentinel in 2017. By way of example, he cited the inclusion of the word "might" in a standard reading, "Human actions such as burning fossil fuels might impact Earth's climate."
The new standards received "overwhelming support ... from science teachers" in Colorado, according to Chalkbeat. Voting to accept the new standards were Val Flores, Jane Goff, Rebecca McClellan, and Angelika Schroeder; voting against were Steve Durham, Joyce Rankin, and Debora Scheffel.

Why start or join a club?
DRAFT 6/6/18
Designed to Un-Polarize
Club is an English civil war neologism. It was a term with strong overtones... which are entirely lost today since we use the term casually for all kinds of societies and associations of like minded individuals for a purpose…'club-men' were those who deliberately suppressed political differences, in order to combine and protect their interests against all comers... 'Clubbing together' in self-defense. Lisa Jardine, "On a Grander Scale: The Outstanding Life of Sir Christopher Wren," 2002 HarperCollins, New York, p 112
We are working to bring back this type of club, updated for the 21st Century by way of Ben Franklin, Malcolm Knowles and Sugatra Mitra. Will you join us?

I've decided not to renew my subscription with Ancestory.com. After spending way too much time and money, this is what I now know about my dad's geneology:
Relationship between Joseph Wren & John Thomas Wren
Joseph Wren (1794 - 1854)
2nd great-grandfather
John Edgar Wren (1840 - 1910)

Sick of politics as usual?!
5-2-18__When Saira Rao decided to run for Congress, she vowed she wouldn’t accept any political action committee donations.
Instead, she decided to raise money the old-fashioned way. She made a list of everyone she’s ever met. Then she added the names of people who knew her parents before she painstakingly contacted each one by phone, email or text. The effort was worth it.
In the first quarter of this year, she raised more money than DeGette. “The remarkable thing was they came,” Rao said. “They gave. They believe in this need for change, this hunger for change.”
The first challenge was getting on the primary ballot. Now, Rao wants to connect with all the voters in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. The district of nearly 1 million residents, which includes Denver, Glendale, Englewood, Sheridan and Cherry Hills Village, has 120,000 homes. Rao wants to be able to hire enough people to supplement her volunteer base to knock on all those doors.
Rao, who with a college friend launched In This Together Media, publishes books for young adults and children that feature black, brown, LGBTQ, and immigrant kids as central characters. Just as her company serves an audience who has been ignored, Rao wants to serve constituents who haven’t been heard.
“Some people say we need to take back our country, but people of color never thought we had the country, to begin with,” she said. “We need to take our country and make it equitable, socially, racially, economically.”
Rao chose to run for Congress because she thinks that’s where she can make the biggest difference. “I’m disappointed in our current leaders. They aren’t advocating for the disenfranchised. They are too beholden to corporate interests.”
Rao squares off against DeGette on the June 26 primary ballot. |
“I just have one thing to say: Imagine me with subpoena power,” she said, pledging to subpoena EPA chief Scott Pruitt, the Denver Post reported.
Although the district is considered safely Democratic, the primary winner faces Casper Stockham, who also challenged DeGette in 2016, in November.
If Rao is able to defeat DeGette, she hopes her campaign shows candidates don’t have to have big money to win. And if she wins, Rao promises she won’t become focused only on raising money for her next race. Her goal is to listen to her constituents first.
Then she'll fight to secure federal housing and transit money and search for better ways than prison to rehabilitate criminals.
Rao said it’s time for American voters to stop electing the same people. Instead, voters should install a new Congress who isn’t beholden to corporate interests. “Voters should defeat anyone who takes PAC money,” she said. For more about Saira click here.

Thinking career rather than startup.
It was not until the 1960s that the startup fad began.
Startup has never been written about as much as careers.
And the more talk about startup the fewer startups.

Probate Courts
I'm forming a community of practice to dialogue about the probate process. Two brothers I know well have been drawn into a ridiculous legal battle that has resulted in each of them paying lawyers some $250,000 I'm told. My brother Randy dying without a will has resulted in a similar situation that has the potential of the same sort of thing, a concern that is not at all frivolous or trivial. Others have shared their probate court nightmares with me.
I'm calling the University of Denver law school and a couple of academic departments to find students who might be interested. I will bring this up as a topic at our Socrates Cafe at the University of Denver tomorrow (Saturday, 1-6) which is free and open to everyone, you reading this now would be welcome to join us. For the last couple of years we've been meeting in Anderson Academic Commons (was Penrose Library), more info about it and other metro-Denver Socrates Cafes at www.Meetup.com/Socrates-Cafe-Society

Pot and politics.
What do you think? Is pot ok? My views here later.
I'll be suggesting a related topic at Socrates Cafe in LoDo this evening: how do we individually and as a society make decisions regarding what's healthy and what is not healthy. Have health concerns and fitness centers become our religion? If so, what is the accepted dogma?
Usually a good discussion, 6 p.m. at Panera Bread LoDo, more at www.Meetup.com/Socrates-Cafe-Society about this evening (Fri, 1-5) and our other metro-Denver Socrates Cafes. Join us!
